wftv.com$9.25 million settlement announced in 2020 protest lawsuits
PHILADELPHIA — (AP) — Philadelphia officials announced a $9.25 million settlement Monday with hundreds of people over several lawsuits challenging the police response to the protests and civil disorder in 2020 after George Floyd's death at the hands of Minneapolis police. In addition, a grant will provide $500,000 to $600,000 for mental health counseling for west Philadelphia residents. Kinney told WCAU-TV he hoped the settlement would “continue the healing process” following the pandemic, racial injustice, civil unrest and Donald Trump's presidency. Some of the plaintiffs cited lingering injuries and health effects due to tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets and the zip-ties used in their arrests. Many of the speakers said the settlement will not end their efforts and vowed to seek far-reaching reforms of police operations and conduct.

wftv.comGilmore, Waller on the move; Bradberry stays with Eagles
Stephon Gilmore is on the move again, Darren Waller is getting traded from the Raiders less than two weeks after marrying Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum and James Bradberry is staying in Philadelphia. In 2022, Waller caught 28 passes for 388 yards and three TDs, missing eight games because of a pulled hamstring. The Raiders agreed to a deal with Garoppolo on Monday and placed the franchise tag on Jacobs last week. The trade pairs Gilmore with 2021 NFL interceptions leader Trevon Diggs, who had 11 of his 17 career picks that season. The NFC champion Eagles agreed to a three-year, $38 million contract to keep Bradberry, a second-team All-Pro cornerback, in Philadelphia.
wftv.comFlyers interim GM Briere believes franchise needs a rebuild
PHILADELPHIA — (AP) — Danny Briere is not reluctant to say the word his predecessor willfully avoided when plotting the best course for the forlorn Flyers: rebuilding. Yes, the record was abysmal, but what ultimately doomed Fletcher was his inability to settle on a true plan to turn the Flyers into a perennial playoff team. Coach John Tortorella has been blunt about the hard days ahead from his first day on the job and never backed down from saying the Flyers need a multiyear process to become a playoff team. "What was really striking for me was how he was going to rebuild the culture over here,” Briere said. “We’re not going to get rid of everybody.”Briere seemingly will have a major say in the direction of the franchise.
wftv.comDog hilariously interrupts Philadelphia Union CONCACAF match, bolts straight for the ball
The Philadelphia Union should have just let the dog stay on the pitch. In the 68th minute of the Philadelphia Union’s CONCACAF match against Alianza on Tuesday night, a dog popped up and ran onto the field at Estadio Cuscatlan in El Salvador. The match stopped, but the dog knew exactly what to do. The dog didn’t seem bothered by that one bit, either, and was clearly very proud of himself. They’ll meet again next week in Philadelphia where, if we’re lucky, another good boy will try to get in on the action.
wftv.comNo bail for Pennsylvania man with explosives in suitcase
PHILADELPHIA — (AP) — A Pennsylvania man admitted packing explosive materials, fuses and a lighter in a suitcase he checked for a commercial flight to Florida and fled the Lehigh Valley airport when he feared arrest, federal authorities said in a court document filed Thursday. “The danger he created ... is simply astonishing,” Assistant United States Attorney Sherri A. Stephan said at a Thursday court hearing, when she asked a judge to deny bail. However, U.S. Magistrate Pamela A. Carlos agreed to detain him without bail, finding that Muffley was both a flight risk and a danger to the community. His girlfriend told authorities he feared being arrested at the airport on an outstanding child support warrant, authorities said.

And James — who just passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the NBA scoring record — says the 23 games the Lakers have left carry incredible significance. An NBA regular season has 1,230 games; 884, or 72%, have been played. No reigning champion has missed the following season’s playoffs since the Chicago Bulls didn’t get to the postseason in 1999. The only teams that hit the break with that good of a winning percentage and missed the playoffs were the 2007-08 Warriors and last season’s Cavaliers. Not one, not two, but three NBA teams play three consecutive games in Los Angeles during March — the Lakers, the Clippers and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
