Motorcyclist killed in crash near Pine Hills, troopers say

The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the crash scene. FHP said a 47-year-old Orlando woman was heading westbound on Silver Star Road and the motorcyclist was heading eastbound on Silver Star Road.
FEMA to host walk-up vaccination site in Pine Hills
ORLANDO, Fla. – FEMA’s mobile vaccination site will be setting up in Orlando’s Pine Hills neighborhood on Thursday. The walk-up site will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday at Barnett Park. Shots are available to all those eligible, including seniors, law enforcement over the age of 50 and K-12 educators. People hoping to get vaccinated can get their shots in the gymnasium. The mobile site will be moved to South Econ Park Gym on March 14.
5 hospitalized following accident on State Road 408, authorities say
Three adults and two children were hospitalized following a crash on State Road 408 on Sunday, according to Orange County Fire Rescue. The crash occurred westbound on State Road 408 between Pine Hills and Kirkman Road, authorities said. Two adults were taken on trauma alerts to Orlando Health, two children were taken to Arnold Palmer hospital and another adult was taken to Orlando Health, authorities said.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Workers at four Orange County community centers lent a helping hand Friday as many seniors in Florida continue to struggle with booking an online coronavirus vaccine appointment. Staff at Holden Heights, Pine Hills, East Orange and Taft community centers walked residents through the process of registering for a shot. People must create a CDR Health account in order to get tested or schedule a vaccine appointment. “I don’t know what to do, so I’m most grateful for the community centers and the folks here that are assisting us,” Clark said. 1 woman, 2 girls shot at Orange County home
ORLANDO, Fla. – One woman and two girls were shot Sunday morning in a Pine Hills neighborhood, according to authorities. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called at 9:07 a.m. to the 1500 block of Ridge Pointe Drive. Authorities said the shooting was a domestic incident, and the suspected shooter was detained Sunday night in Henry County, Georgia. “It’s a terrible thing, and I just hope the family or the members of the family who got shot will be doing okay,” said neighbor Charles Davis. Authorities have not said when Fryer will be extradited to Orange County to face charges.
Juvenile shot at Orange County gas station
ORLANDO, Fla. – A juvenile was shot late Sunday at an Orange County gas station, according to deputies. The shooting was reported around 10:05 p.m. at the Citgo at Silver Star and Pine Hills roads. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting was possibly a drive-by, but no other details have been released. The victim, whose age has not been released, was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
‘We have nowhere to go:’ Fire at Pine Hills apartment complex leaves residents homeless
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – More than 30 people are now left trying to figure out where to call home after a fire at the Pine Hills apartment complex on Saturday. A spokesperson with Millennia Companies, the apartment complex management company, said that about 32 people were displaced, including about 22 children. She said now especially, since the fire happened there, she wants to make sure the affected families affected can have a merry Christmas. The Red Cross will also be assisting the affected families with a gift card of $500 to assist with hotel accommodations and other necessities. Saturday’s toy drive is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jernigan Gardens Apartments.
Pine Hills food drive feeds hundreds of families ahead of Thanksgiving
PINE HILLS, Fla. – Across the country and throughout Central Florida, there has been a big need for food heading into Thanksgiving. Future Leaders United and United Foundation of Central Florida, in part hosted the food giveaway Tuesday in Pine Hills and fed 900 families. She said she was grateful for Tuesday’s meals in Pine Hills. Orange County Public Schools said they wanted to help families over the holiday break while schools were closed, but there were more people than expected. Unfortunately, the demand was greater than the resources available and several sites ran out of meals sooner than expected.
New affordable housing for seniors opens in Pine Hills
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Nearly 100 new units at the Preserve at Emerald Villas in Pine Hills will now be the home to dozens of seniors in Orange County. The $19 million project was designed to help seniors who earn from 40% to 60% of the area median income. “This is an opportunity for us to have a public, private partnership to address the deficit of affordable housing here in our community,” Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said. The property was bought back in 2011 and was in deep foreclosure then became the second phase of development at Emerald Villas affordable housing. Pozzo said less than 20 units are still available for seniors at the Preserve at Emerald Villas.
Homicides increased by 22% in Orange County so far this year
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County’s new Citizen’s Safety Task Force meeting convened Friday for the first time to address the seven recent shootings that took the lives of two 14-year-olds and one 3-year-old. At the same time, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police Department revealed the large upswing in homicides this year. In 2017, the Orange County Sheriff used a federal grant to dedicate 15 full-time deputies to Pine Hills.
Orange County deputies make 75 arrests in gang-related violence
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said they have made 75 gang-related arrests since late July in efforts to crack down on increasing violence. One of the most recent arrests happened Wednesday afternoon when deputies arrested 19-year-old Joshua Holder. That would be him,” said Lt. Paul Volkerson with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. He said AFNF – also known as The Army – and 438 are two of the most violent gangs in Orange County right now. Volkerson said many of the incidents that have happened in Orange County since April involved high-powered weapons.
Orlando area community plots strategy to tackle gang violence
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Around 100 people gathered on Thursday to come up with solutions to the gang violence hitting the Pine Hills community of Orlando. The meeting took place at True Life Church, about one mile away from where three-year-old Daquan Felix was shot and killed last week in a drive-by shooting. “We had another shooting in Ocoee,” Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill said. Orlando bishop holds funerals for last 10 weekends amid gang violence
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Residents, spiritual and community leaders gathered Wednesday night to rally against the gang violence that has hit the Pine Hills neighborhood. Cobaris and Bishop Derrick Hutchins met with residents at New Life Church on North Powers Drive. Hutchins said he’s held a funeral at his church every weekend for the last ten weeks -- sometimes twice a day. Orange County sheriff’s investigators said the shooting was part of a feud between two rival gangs -- the 438 and the Army gangs. Cobaris and Hutchins said they’re working with law enforcement to encourage people to report things they find suspicious in their neighborhoods, but they’re also asking investigators to do more.
14-year-old killed, 15-year-old critically injured in Orange County shooting
PINE HILLS, Fla. – A 14-year-old boy was killed and a 15-year-old boy was critically wounded late Monday in an Orange County neighborhood shooting, according to deputies. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Dennis Joshua Atkinson, who attended Evans High School, died in the shooting, which was reported at 11:07 p.m. in the 1600 block of Glendale Road in Pine Hills. According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the area and found the teens shot in front of a home. Both victims were taken to a hospital with traumatic wounds, and Atkinson was pronounced dead, according to deputies. Detectives said anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
Authorities searching for 71-year-old woman

Orlando man charged in fatal shooting in Pine Hills
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - The Orange County Sheriff's Office said a man was killed in a shooting Thursday on Belco Drive in Pine Hills. The Sheriff's Office said deputies were called around 8:40 p.m. to Jerico's Drive Thru. Investigators said a 30-year-old man was shot and rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Man killed in Pine Hills apartment shooting, deputies say
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - Detectives are seeking the public's help after a man was killed when a Pine Hills apartment was shot up earlier this month, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office. She saw Rucker's feet hit the floor and heard the sound of another gunshot and two people running out the apartment, records show. Deputies said the witness knew the two men were dressed in all black but didn't get a good look at them. Detectives found the sliding glass door had been broken and two fresh-looking holes in the wall, according to the report. Deputies posted on social media that a $5,000 reward is being offered for tips for information from the community.
