Machado was one of five Padres with three hits as San Diego routed the Cubs for the second straight hot night at Wrigley Field. After Machado's run-scoring hit, San Diego increased its lead to 2-0 on Alfaro’s force out in the first. After Kilian hit Ha-Seong Kim with a pitch in the fourth, the Padres sprayed three straight hits, capped by Cronenworth’ second double, to take a 5-4 lead.

He became the fifth player in the modern era to make his big league debut in a postseason game — and three of those newcomers did it this year. The Padres lost 5-1, but it was scoreless when Weathers came in — a reasonably high-pressure situation, compared to other players who made their debuts in the postseason. In 2015, Adalberto Mondesi made his debut for Kansas City in Game 3 of the World Series. "He’s here to play, and that’s why we carried him on this roster.”McClanahan's debut came in Game 1 of the AL Division Series on Monday night.
Walk in new park: Dodgers open NLDS with 5-1 win over Padres

Another run scored on a wild pitch and the Dodgers also got their 10th walk, matching Atlanta in 1997 for the most in a nine-inning NLDS game. Garrett Richards (0-1), the sixth of nine Padres pitchers, was gone after giving up the hit to Betts. It was only his second start start since a two-hit shutout in a seven-inning complete game Sept. 13. Dodgers: INF Edwin Rios was left off the NLDS roster because of a groin issue.
