People who want to bring sloths into Florida will have to file for a special permit under a new rule by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The new policy was created after dozens of sloths died in the care of a group planning to open the Sloth World attraction on International Drive in Orlando.

Another of the sloths from Sloth World has died. The Central Florida Zoo in Sanford announced that Willow, one of 14 sloths that arrived at the zoo in April, had to be put to sleep.

Florida lawmakers and conservation groups are pushing for sweeping sloth protection reforms following the collapse of Sloth World, an Orlando attraction tied to the deaths of at least 56 imported wild-caught sloths.

The Central Florida Zoo is extending the quarantine period for the rescued sloths connected to Sloth World as the animals continue recovering from the conditions they arrived in one month ago.

Central Florida Zoo officials say Mr. Ginger, one of the dozen or so sloths from Sloth World under the zoo’s care, has died. The zoo announced the youngest of the Sloth World sloths died despite round-the-clock efforts, including being hand-fed every few hours and spending time much of his time in an incubator to regulate his body temperature. Mr. Ginger was believed to be only four to six months old.

Florida wildlife officials are stopping the importation of all sloths into the state in the wake of the deaths of dozens of sloths meant for an Orlando attraction.

The zoo confirmed the remaining 12 sloths are currently in stable condition. Staff said their full focus has now shifted to ensuring those animals continue to recover.

A planned tourist attraction along International Drive has been shut down before ever opening its doors after state investigators say more than 30 sloths died while in the care of the business.
