25 years later: The shot that might have launched the legend of Tiger Woods, and changed golf forever

In addition to the storyline of it likely being Tiger Woods' first tournament since a car accident, this year also marks the 25th anniversary of his first Masters and major tournament win that forever changed the game of golf.

At Masters, some come to see golfers, others to see gnomes

He wouldn’t say how he got two; signage in the store said the Masters was limiting them to one per person. That they will, whether it’s gnomes, shirts, belts, hats and anything else they can get with the Masters logo. There’s countless reasons why: not everyone can get to the Masters since the ticket is among the toughest in sports, and the Masters also doesn’t sell merchandise online — except for some images, the Masters Journal and the Masters Annual that recaps tournament week. And for the record, many on-site shoppers got bad news once they got into the Masters store Tuesday. ___More AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golf and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsCopyright 2022 The Associated Press.

The Masters is scheduled for April 7-10, 2022 at Augusta National in Augusta, Ga. (AP Photo/Scott Audette) (Scott Audette)AUGUSTA, Ga. — (AP) — A comeback unlike any other for Tiger Woods might start at the Masters. The Masters does not have a firm deadline to commit like regular tour events. Doctors said Woods shattered tibia and fibula bones in his right leg in multiple locations. That he is even contemplating playing in this Masters is remarkable in its own right. Woods has played the Masters 21 times as a pro, and it’s the only major where he has never missed the cut.

Tiger Woods helps Masters' champion Dustin Johnson with his green jacket after his victory at the Masters golf tournament Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020, in Augusta, Ga. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)AUGUSTA, Ga. – Nothing ever comes easily for Dustin Johnson in the majors, except for when he slipped his arms through that Masters green jacket Sunday. Johnson overcame a jittery start that conjured memories of past majors he failed to finish off. His five-shot victory was the largest at the Masters since Woods won by 12 in 1997. “As a kid, you're dreaming about winning the Masters, having Tiger put the green jacket on you. No one had a better finish than defending champion Tiger Woods, but only after the five-time Masters champion posted the highest score of his career — three balls in Rae's Creek for a 10 on the par-3 12th hole.

Casey rides the buzz of Masters history to 65 and early lead

Paul Casey matched his lowest score at the Masters with a 7-under 65, giving him a two-shot lead among half the field fortunate to play in perfect scoring conditions. It was the fifth hole, which he bogeyed all four rounds last year when he won the Masters. He was joined by Xander Schauffele, a runner-up to Woods last year, who had seven birdies in his round of 67. The delay was the last thing the Masters needed with limited daylight hours leading to the two-tee start. The loudest cheer — applause, certainly not a roar — came for Nicklaus and Player hitting tee shots so early that they couldn't see where they landed.

Augusta National in November? 5 reasons why this year’s Masters will stand alone in history

If you’re clicking around on the remote control while watching TV this weekend, odds are, you’ll stumble on som sights of Augusta National Golf Club. Yes, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, that will be the case for the first time in the history of the illustrious tournament. Paul Casey of England plays a shot on the second hole during a practice round prior to the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club on November 09, 2020 in Augusta, Georgia. (Photo by Patrick Smith) (Getty Images)One of the reasons the Masters is often the most-rated golf tournament is the stunning sight of azaleas and other flowers throughout the course. No fansThis won’t be any different from any other golf tournament or major sporting event this year.

No blooms, no fans, no roars make this Masters like no other

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel, File)Nothing about this Masters will look familiar until the champion slips his arms through a green jacket. The purple, pink and white blooms of azaleas and dogwoods, which provide such a magnificent accent to Augusta National in spring, give way to the orange and gold hues of autumn. No need for those green “Golf Traffic” signs posted about the city, or people lining the streets of Washington Road looking for tickets. For the veterans, it might not be much different from their scouting trips to Augusta National. But nowhere else than Augusta National will the quiet be so difficult to ignore.
