The autopsy report from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s office found Jackson suffered from alcoholic cardiomyopathy, hepatic steatosis and fibrosis, jaundice and renal failure among other conditions consistent with chronic alcohol use, ESPN reported. While playing with the Chargers – at the time in San Diego – Jackson was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in 2006 and 2009, Reuters reported.

The late player’s family on Thursday released the findings of a study conducted by the Boston-based Concussion Legacy Foundation’s brain bank in hopes of raising awareness of CTE and the risks of the disease. “Vincent Jackson was a brilliant, disciplined, gentle giant whose life began to change in his mid-30s. “That his brain showed stage 2 CTE should no longer surprise us; these results have become commonplace,” the doctor added in the foundation statement.

The brain of former NFL receiver Vincent Jackson is going to be donated for CTE research, a spokesperson for his family confirmed to CBS Tampa affiliate WTSP-TV. Evidence of CTE has been found in the brains of numerous athletes in sports that feature hard contact among their participants. The spokesperson, Allison Gorrell, told multiple news outlets Jackson's brain will be sent to Boston University to determine whether he suffered from the degenerative brain disease.
