The driver of the other car, William Hellums, 57, of Port Orange, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand, the FHP said.

According to troopers, Hayes was driving a 2002 four-door Chrysler westbound on New York Avenue when he traveled into the eastbound lanes for an unknown reason and struck a 2016 four-door Chevrolet driven by Hellums.

Hayes was taken to Halifax Medical Center and later died, the FHP said. His passenger, Michaud, died at the scene, according to troopers.

It's not known if alcohol played a role in the crash, the FHP said.
