The FHP said Calverley was driving a 2004 Toyota pickup truck north on U.S. 1 when he traveled into the median for an unknown reason. Troopers said he overcorrected and the pickup left the roadway, overturned onto its roof and struck a tree.

Calverley, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, the FHP said.

"The members of the New Smyrna Beach Police Department are heartbroken to report the loss of one of our family members," the agency said in a statement. "Josh Calverley was a soft-spoken officer with a big heart. His loss will be felt throughout the local law enforcement community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."

Calverley, a U.S. Army veteran, became an officer with NSBPD in December 2015.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 407-737-2213.
