Man, 73, struck, killed by FHP cruiser while walking in Marion County road

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A 73-year-old Marion County man was struck and killed by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper early Wednesday in Marion County while walking in a road, officials with the FHP said.

The fatal crash was reported at 12:15 a.m. on U.S. Highway 441 at SE 74th Terrace, southeast of Belleview.

According to the FHP, Walter Strauch was walking north in the southbound lane of U.S. 441 when he was struck by a Dodge Charger driven by Trooper Raul Umana, 25, of Ocala.

Strauch, of Belleview, was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue. Umana was on duty at the time of the crash and does not face any charges, officials said.

It's not known why Strauch was walking in the road.
