If you’re a qualified medical marijuana patient in Florida, it’s important to know the right — and legal — way to travel with your medication.
While the law does allow transportation, it comes with strict guidelines to protect both you and the public.
1. Purchase Legally
First and foremost, your medical marijuana must come from a state-licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MMTC). That means buying it from a dispensary — not from a friend or any other unauthorized source.
2. Keep In Original Packaging
Once you leave the dispensary, do not remove the product from its original packaging. The container should remain sealed and clearly labeled with your prescription information and dosage instructions.
This not only proves you’re a legal patient, it also shows law enforcement that you’re complying with state law.

3. Store Properly In Vehicle
When transporting your medical marijuana, it must be stored in a secure part of your vehicle, ideally in the trunk or a locked glove compartment. Think of it like transporting a firearm: it should not be within immediate reach of the driver.
Leaving it out in the open, especially in the front seat or center console, could lead to legal issues, even if you’re authorized to have it.
4. Never Use While Driving
Even with a valid medical marijuana card, it is illegal to consume marijuana in your vehicle or drive under the influence. Doing so can result in DUI charges, just like alcohol or other controlled substances.
Florida law supports medical marijuana use, but with responsibility comes regulation. Always travel with care, and if you’re unsure about your rights, check with your dispensary or legal advisor before hitting the road.
