BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 77-year-old Melbourne man was struck by a car and killed Thursday morning while riding a bicycle in Brevard County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 9:15 a.m. at North Wickham Road and Stadium Parkway.
According to an FHP crash report, the man was riding a bicycle west on North Wickham Road as a sedan traveled south on Stadium Parkway — driven by a 90-year-old Merritt Island man — both vehicles approaching the intersection.
As the sedan continued through the intersection, the bicyclist entered its path and was struck by the front left of the car as a result, troopers said. The Merritt Island man and an independent witness each told troopers that the car had a green traffic light, according to FHP.
The Melbourne man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the report. The Merritt Island man was not injured in the crash and remained at the scene, the report states.
Troopers said the Melbourne man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
FHP is still investigating.
