ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Two more so-called “super speeders” are facing charges after they were pulled over and arrested by deputies in Orange County.
Arrest affidavits obtained by News 6 show both drivers are accused of going over 100 mph before they were stopped on the Florida Turnpike and State Road 408 on Tuesday.
Both Abimael Calo-Gutierrez and Delano Oshane Steele are accused of “dangerous excessive speed.”
The officer who arrested Calo-Gutierrez wrote in his report that he spotted a car changing lanes and cutting other cars off as he was traveling on the Florida Turnpike from Interstate 4. The officer tried to keep pace with the vehicle and noted that his agency car was traveling at 119 mph at one point with the car staying ahead of him, the report states.
Once Calo-Gutierrez was pulled over, he reportedly told the officer he was speeding because “his car was about to break.” According to the affidavit, he also was driving with a learner’s permit.
An arrest affidavit for Steele states he was stopped by an officer in an unmarked patrol car who saw a vehicle speeding on S.R. 408 near Goldenrod Road. According to the officer, Steele was arrested for going 113 mph in a 60 mph zone.
Under the “Dangerous Excessive Speeding Act,” anyone convicted of operating a motor vehicle 50 mph or more above the posted speed limit, or driving 100 mph or more “in a manner that threatens the safety of other persons or property or interferes with the operation of any vehicle,” can be sentenced to a maximum of 30 days in jail and given a $500 fine for a first offense.
