HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A 27-year-old Spring Hill, Florida, woman was struck and killed Sunday night after she exited a vehicle to check on an injured opossum, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The fatal crash happened around 9:50 p.m. on Hexam Road, east of Eskimo Curlew Road in Hernando County.

The FHP said a Toyota Camry driven by the woman’s husband was traveling on Hexam Road and stopped to check on an injured opossum.
The woman got out to “attend to the opossum,” but was struck by a Chrysler 300 driven by a 19-year-old Weeki Wachee man, according to the FHP.
The woman was taken to a hospital and died, troopers said.
No other details have been released.
The crash comes a month after a 77-year-old man was struck and killed on I-95 in Florida while trying to save a turtle.
Spring Hill is located about 80 miles west of Orlando.
