ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Dozens of families at an Altamonte Springs apartment complex were told to get out of their homes Thursday because of city-ordered construction.
Tenants in Buildings 3 and 6 at the Altamonte Terrace Apartments on Douglas Avenue received the letter from management on Wednesday afternoon, notifying them they must vacate by Friday at noon.
“I’m a disabled 60-year-old woman with two daughters that work,” said tenant Amaryllis Delgado. “One goes to school and a granddaughter who is only seven. So we’re gonna be in the street now.”
Many residents say they just paid rent and live on a fixed income.
“I don’t know anybody that can put together the money to pack up everything with children at all and be gone in two days,” said tenant Steven Matthews.
A property manager told News 6 they plan to move all impacted tenants to the hotel in front of the property for a few weeks while repairs are made. After that, management said residents will be able to return home.
But not everyone believes that plan will work.
“How you gonna put all these people up? There is no way,” Delgado said. “I don’t care how many apartments they say are empty. They should’ve fixed what they had to fix when they needed to fix it.”
Several residents believe the buildings were closed or condemned due to roof damage, but property management did not explain why the repairs are happening.
The property management company sent this statement to News 6:
“Some of the tenants at Altamonte Terrace will be temporarily relocated to the hotel for several weeks while there is some construction at no additional cost to them.
“Our first concern is the safety of the tenants during the construction.
“We appreciate everyone’s understanding during this temporary process.”
