Motorcyclist killed in 5-vehicle crash in Melbourne, troopers say

Crash occurred on US-1 near Rocway Drive

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Troopers responded to a deadly five-vehicle crash on northbound U.S. 1 just north of Rocway Drive in Melbourne, Monday morning.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report, the crash occurred when four vehicles – a Honda Shadow VLX motorcycle, a Volkswagen Tiguan, a Kia Rio, and a Nissan Sentra – were slowing for traffic in the northbound lanes. The driver of a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox failed to slow down and struck the motorcycle from behind.

After the initial impact, the Equinox continued forward and hit the rear of the Volkswagen Tiguan. The motorcycle slid and collided with a Kia Rio, while debris from the collision struck a Nissan Sentra, the crash report states.

The motorcyclist and the Tiguan’s driver were transported to the hospital, where the motorcyclist was pronounced dead. The drivers of the Equinox, Kia, and Nissan were uninjured and remained at the scene, troopers said.
