15-year-old on electric scooter killed in Brevard County hit-and-run crash, troopers say

VIERA, Fla. – A 15-year-old boy from Melbourne was killed in an early morning hit-and-run crash in Viera, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just before 4 a.m. Sunday at Viera Boulevard and Independence Avenue.

According to an FHP report, a 2009 Hyundai Genesis was traveling east on Viera Boulevard when it veered onto the right shoulder and struck the teen who was riding an electric scooter in the same direction.

After hitting the teen, the driver fled the scene. The victim was transported to the hospital, where he later died, troopers said.

Investigators found a passenger-side mirror at the crash scene, which was identified as belonging to a black 2009-2010 Hyundai Genesis. A search led troopers to a vehicle approximately 1.5 miles south of the crash scene with damage consistent with the collision.

Investigators took possession of the vehicle and are processing it for evidence. The case remains an active criminal investigation.
