2 women struck in hit-and-run after initial crash, FHP says

Crashes reported on Orange Blossom Trail at Wetherbee Road

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two women were struck in a hit-and-run Monday morning in Orange County after their vehicle was involved in a chain-reaction crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The initial chain-reaction crash was reported at 3:20 a.m. on Orange Blossom Trail at Wetherbee Road, south of Orlando.

The FHP said two vehicles were stopped at a traffic light when a car struck one of the vehicles, causing a three-vehicle crash.

Two women in one of the vehicles got out and were struck by another car, a 1992 Honda Civic, troopers said.

"Almost immediately after they got out of the car, they were both struck by the Honda Civic," FHP spokeswoman Lt. Kim Montes said.

The women, both of Kissimmee, were taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center. One suffered serious injuries and the other was critically injured, the FHP said.

"We continue to have people leaving the scene," Montes sadi. "It's morally and ethically wrong. This is another human being that has been struck."

Troopers said they located the Honda Civic in the parking lot of the Walgreens at Landstar and Rhode Island Circle. The owner of the car, a woman, is cooperating with the investigation, but the driver, a man, has not been identified, the FHP said.

"We found this car because somebody in the community called us, and that's how we solve theses cases," Montes said. "People get involved and they call law enforcement when they see something."

The intersection reopened after crews cleared glass and debris from the scene.
