Schools announce closures for Hurricane Matthew

Most Central Florida public schools and universities closed Thursday, Friday

Schools and universities have started announcing campus closures in preparation for Hurricane Matthew, expected to bring heavy rain and wind to Central Florida starting on Friday.

School closures will be posted below when they are announced. Check back for updates.

Brevard

  • Brevard Public Schools to be closed due to extreme weather conditions according to a news release from the school. BPS has just completed its EOC policy meeting. 
  • Superintendent Desmond Blackburn has declared that all BPS will be closed both Thursday and Friday due to inclement weather. All school-associated activities will be canceled throughout the weekend as well. 
    School will remain open Wednesday. All after-school activities, except after school care, which will close at 6 p.m., are canceled. 
    The school district will work with local agencies to monitor the storm's progress to determine when it is safe to resume classes.

Flagler

  • Flagler County Schools has canceled all afterschool events on Wednesday, but extended day programs will continue. All classes and school activities for Thursday and Friday have been canceled.

Lake

  • Lake County schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday. Lake County’s emergency operations team is making storm preparation plans that include using schools as shelters.

  • Beacon College in Leesburg will close at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Classes are also canceled for Friday.

Marion

  • Marion County school are open on Thursday on normal schedules, but evening activities are canceled. School is closed on Friday, including evening activities. Updates will be shared on the school's website, via Skylert phone messaging, and Twitter @MarionCountyK12.

Orange

  • Orange County has closed schools Thursday and Friday. All activities are closed on and off campus Thursday through Sunday. Visit ocps.net with updates.

Osceola

  • All Osceola County school district schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday, including after school activities.

Seminole

  • Seminole County has canceled school Thursday and Friday due to Hurricane Matthew. This includes all extra-curricular activities and before/after school childcare programs such as Extended Day, 21st Century, and our YMCA middle school programs.  Weekend athletics and extracurricular activities are also canceled.

Sumter

  • Schools are open a half day on Thursday, but closed on Friday. Visit the school's website for more information.

Volusia

  • School has been canceled in Volusia County for Thursday and Friday, including after school/athletic events. Wednesday remains under normal operations, including athletic events and extended day.

Colleges

  • The UCF main campus will close Wednesday at 3 p.m., Brevard campuses closed at noon. UCF will remain closed on Thursday and Friday. Students and faculty can follow updates at today.ucf.edu.
  • University of Florida will be closing its Gainesville campus on Friday, Oct. 7.
  • The UCF vs. Tulane game has been postponed until Nov. 5, according to a UCF Knights tweet.
  • All four Eastern Florida State College campuses will be closed Thursday through Sunday due to Hurricane Matthew.
  • Bethune Cookman University issued a mandatory evacuation on Wednesday, saying all classes will be suspended Wednesday at noon. Students must evacuate residence halls by 6 p.m. on Wednesday and if unable to evacuate, they will be assigned an on-campus shelter.
  • Rollins College has canceled classes Thursday and Friday. The college will close its normal operations at noon Thursday and at 5 p.m. Thursday anyone choosing to remain on campus should be advised sheltering-in-place may be mandated for the duration of the storm. More info.
  • Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University announced it will cancel classes at the Daytona Beach campus beginning at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew.
    The Daytona Beach campus headquarters building and university administrative offices will close at 2 p.m. Thursday, and the campus will remain closed Friday. There is no scheduled evacuation of the campus at this time. Residence halls will remain staffed and open until further notice.
    All homecoming activities, including the Industry/Career Expo, scheduled for Thursday and Friday are officially canceled. Saturday homecoming events are still being evaluated.
  • Barry University School of Law will close at noon on Wednesday. Barry Law students and employees should monitor the barry.edu/prepare website, our Emergency Hotline at 305-899-4000.
  • All Seminole State College campuses will be closed from 10 p.m. Wednesday until midnight on Sunday. Students can call the Emergency Hotline at 407-708-2290 for updated information.
  • Stetson University classes are canceled starting Wednesday at noon on DeLand and Celebration campuses.
  • The Palm Beach Atlantic University Orlando Campus will close at 2 p.m. on Thursday and all classes are canceled. The campus will re-open on Monday.
  • Beacon College in Leesburg will close at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Classes are also canceled for Friday.
  • All Full Sail University campuses, online classes and labs are canceled starting Thursday at 9 a.m. until Monday 9:00 a.m. Full Sail's Behind The Scenes Tour on Sunday is also canceled and will be rescheduled.
  • The Webster University's Metro Orlando campus will be closed on Thursday and Friday. Classes will resume on Monday, Oct. 10.
