Heat, storms bring concerns to Orlando area

ORLANDO, Fla. – Get ready for another hot day across Central Florida.

The heat index is expected to peak at 100 and 106 degrees for many areas Thursday afternoon, with plenty of sunshine pushing temperatures into the lower 90s inland and upper 80s along coastal spots.

Highs and feels like

If you have outdoor plans, stay cautious. Keep hydrated and minimize time outside during the peak heat, especially through mid- and late afternoon. These conditions can lead to increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

Along with the heat, keep an eye on the sky for scattered storms. There is a 50% chance of rain in the afternoon and evening, mainly driven by the sea breeze. Showers are likely to become widespread from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the heaviest rain focused along I-75.

TIming

While lightning and gusty winds up to 50 mph pose the main threats, there is a chance for minor flooding in low-lying areas where heavy rain develops. The overall hail and flooding risk is considered low.

Storm impacts

There are no tropical systems expected to form over the next several days, and the National Hurricane Center has not highlighted any trouble spots.

7 a.m. tropical update

The seven-day forecast keeps Central Florida in a similar pattern: hot afternoons with highs in the lower to mid-90s, nighttime temperatures steady in the mid- to upper 70s, and rain chances hovering at or above 50% most days.

Father’s Day looks hot, with temperatures in the low 90s and rain chances hovering around 40%.
