ORLANDO, Fla. – We’ve settled into our summer pattern with daily sea breeze storms, and that trend continues through the weekend and into next week.
We’re tracking a pattern change that will lead to higher coverage of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms each day. While not everyone will see rain, our interior spots will experience periods of heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and gusty winds.
Rain chances today increase to 60-70% during the afternoon and evening hours. Storms will first develop near the coast before shifting inland. The highest coverage is expected across the interior, where sea breeze boundaries collide later in the day.
A few stronger storms could produce wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph. Slow-moving storms will also be capable of producing locally heavy rainfall, which could lead to ponding on roads and minor flooding in poor drainage areas.
Outside of the rain, heat and humidity remain a major concern. Afternoon temperatures will climb into the lower and middle 90s, while the humidity pushes heat index values close to or above 100 degrees. Overnight temperatures will only fall into the 70s, providing little relief from the muggy conditions.
The combination of heat and humidity will create a moderate heat risk across much of Central Florida today. As we move into next week, areas around Orlando and portions of inland Central Florida could experience periods of major heat risk. Make sure to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, and know the signs of heat-related illness.
Heat and storms continue into next week, with daily rain chances around 40% and highs above normal in the low 90s.
If you’re heading to the beach, a moderate risk of dangerous rip currents continues along all Atlantic Coast beaches. Swim near a lifeguard and never enter the water alone.
