Daytona Beach braces for storm surge as Milton’s winds pick up

Milton expected to exit the state as a category 1 hurricane

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – As Milton moves through Central Florida, the storm’s counter-clockwise motion is stirring up the waves on the Atlantic side of the state, which means storm surge is going to become a problem as the winds pick up.

Volusia County ordered a mandatory evacuation for the beachside, and News 6′s Molly Reed says many people heeded the order. State Road A1A is empty. However, ponding is becoming a problem on the road. All of the causeways to the mainland have been shut down.

High Tide is around 1 a.m., and Molly says that’s when storm surge will really become a problem, and people fear it will be similar to Hurricane Ian in 2022.

Other parts of Volusia County are also concerned about flooding, such as Edgewater, where flooding has been a problem for weeks.

Deltona is also experiencing flooding in the streets.
