Colorado State updates 2025 hurricane season forecast. What you need to know

Outlook calls for 16 named storms

ORLANDO, Fla. – Colorado State University on Wednesday released its updated forecast for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, altering the numbers slightly.

The latest outlook now calls for 16 named storms, eight hurricanes, and three major hurricanes, a slight change from the June forecast, which forecasted 17 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes.

The update keeps the season with above-average activity; a typical season averages about 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

CSU TROPICAL OUTLOOK - JULY

CSU attributes the slight downgrade mainly to increased wind shear in the Caribbean, which can make it harder for storms to develop and strengthen.

That said, the season is still expected to be active overall because ocean waters in the eastern and central Atlantic are warmer than normal, and we’re in a neutral ENSO phase, both of which create a more favorable environment for storms to form and strengthen.

While chances dipped slightly, CSU still shows an above-average chance of a storm nearing Florida within a 50 mile radius.

Probability Forecast Florida

The most important takeaway: it only takes one storm to make it a high-impact year for your family or community.

Now is the time to review your hurricane plan, check your emergency supplies and make sure you’re ready before any storms head our way.
