Tropics Watch: Fernand and a disturbance. Here’s the latest

Florida not likely to be affected by either system

ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center on Monday continues to closely monitor Tropical Storm Fernand in the Atlantic and a disturbance in the Caribbean.

Tropcial Storm Fernand

Fernand remains a well-organized system, maintaining winds around 45 mph.

While there’s still a small window for some slight strengthening, Fernand is quickly heading into cooler waters and stronger wind shear in the north Atlantic.

Forecasters expect the storm to weaken over the next couple of days, likely becoming post-tropical by midweek.

Area Near Windward Islands

A tropical disturbance near the Windward Islands has lost some strength.

This system is moving into a more hostile environment for tropical development, making it unlikely to grow into anything significant.

  • Chance of development in the next 48 hours: Low (10%)
  • Chance of development over the next seven days: Low (10%)

As of now, Florida is not expected to be directly impacted by Fernand or the tropical disturbance.

The next named storm will be called Gabrielle.

Hurricane season runs through November.
