Tropical Storm Melissa forms in Caribbean. Here’s what to know

ORLANDO, Fla. Tropical Storm Melissa has formed in the Caribbean Sea.

The National Hurricane Center on X said it will start initiating advisories on Melissa at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Melissa was located about 300 miles south of Haiti while packing winds of 50 mph. On the forecast track, Melissa is expected to approach the southwestern portion of Haiti and Jamaica later this week.

Impacts

Heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected over portions of the Leeward Islands over the next couple of days.

To the north, residents in Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, Jamaica and Cuba should closely monitor the system as it continues to move west-northwest.

There is a potential for heavy rainfall, flash flooding, strong winds and rough surf later this week, depending on its exact track and intensity.

Most computer models show the system turning north-northeast, away from Florida, but it’s future path is uncertain at this point.

The next named storm will be called Nestor.
