1 killed, sleeping woman wounded in home invasion shootout, deputies say

Orange County deputies investigate fatal shooting at Oak Hill Apartments

ORLANDO, Fla. – A suspected intruder was shot and killed and a sleeping woman was shot during a home invasion early Friday at an Orange County apartment, deputies said.

The fatal shooting was reported at 2:16 a.m. at the Oak Hills Apartments at 4498 Silver Star Road in Orlando.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a shooting and discovered there had been a shootout during a home invasion. Deputies said a possible suspect, Jonathan Brinson, was shot and died at a hospital.

A woman sleeping in another apartment was also struck during the shootout, deputies said. Samantha Gardner was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

"I felt like something hit me in the back of my neck," she said.

Gardner has been released from the hospital.

"I could've died, so many things could've happened," Gardner said.

A resident who lives at the complex said the shooting scared her.

"It makes you want to move out of the area, but I can't afford to live downtown, because it's too expensive," Pamela Catalano said. "Two people were shot and it really didn't surprise me because they've had problems there before. It scares me because that could happen to me, too."

Catalano said she gets really concerned at night.

"I know my neighbors. My neighbors are good, but I don't go out past eight o'clock at night because you're not safe. We need more patrols and these apartment complexes, they should all have a cop on duty," she said.

No other details have been released.
