ORLANDO, Fla. – If you’ve made the big move from across the pond to sunny Florida, you might be wondering: Can I just swap my UK driver’s license for a Florida one?

[Watch video below for Trooper Steve’s answer]

Unfortunately, the answer is no, Florida doesn’t have a direct exchange agreement with the UK (or most European countries). But don’t worry, getting your Florida license isn’t as tricky as it sounds.

Here’s what you need to know:

If you’re just visiting… good news: You can drive in Florida with your valid UK driver’s license for up to one year as a visitor. If your license isn’t in English, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to go with it.

If you’re moving here… once you become a Florida resident, state law says you need to get a Florida driver’s license within 30 days.

While you can’t transfer your UK license directly, here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get you road-ready:

Study the Florida Driver Handbook.

  • Available online from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).

Schedule and take the written knowledge test.

  • You’ll be tested on road signs and traffic laws.
  • Some testing centers offer this online; otherwise, it’s in-person.

Pass a vision and hearing test.

  • Done at the DMV office/Tax Collector office when you apply for your license.

(Possibly) Take the road skills test.

  • Some locations may waive this if you already hold a valid UK license, but check with your local office — it’s not guaranteed.

Bring required documents.

  • You’ll need proof of:
    • Identity (e.g. passport)
    • Social Security number (or exemption letter)
    • Residential address (two proofs, like a utility bill or lease)

Pay the license fee

  • Currently around $48 for a standard Class E license.

Once you’ve completed these steps, congrats — you’re officially licensed to drive in Florida!

A quick tip: Schedule your DMV appointments in advance. Some offices fill up weeks ahead, especially in busy cities.

Whether you’re planning to explore Florida’s beaches or just tackle the morning commute, getting your Florida driver’s license is a rite of passage — and with a little prep, it’s totally manageable.

Safe driving!
