This is Florida’s most stressed city, study finds. Here’s what that means

Researchers looked at stressors from work, finance and health

MIAMI, FLORIDA - OCTOBER 27: Aerial view of palm trees framing the city skyline on October 27, 2021 in Miami, Florida. Some cities in Florida are encouraging the planting of canopy trees, including species such as gumbo limbo, oak, ash, elm, and sycamore, in place of palms. Palm trees do not sequester carbon at the same rate as native canopy trees to help with climate change. A tree absorbs carbon during photosynthesis and stores it for the tree's life, but Florida's palm trees are the least effective at carbon sequestration. On Monday, WalletHub released its latest report on the most stressed cities in the country.

The study examines factors of stress like health, safety, family, finances, and work to determine which areas of the country are struggling with stress the most.

“Stress is not always a bad thing, though,” the study reads. “Certain kinds of stress can have positive effects on a person’s well-being, at least in the right doses.”

Here’s how these four key factors break down:

  • Work Stress: Includes job security, employment rates, commute times, job satisfaction and income growth
  • Financial Stress: Includes foreclosures, poverty rates, bankruptcies, household incomes and debt
  • Family Stress: Includes divorce rates, single-parent households, childcare availability, and childcare costs
  • Health & Safety Stress: Includes mental health, suicide rates, binge drinkers, insurance, crime, and obesity

Nationwide, the most stressed-out city was revealed to be Detroit, with particular emphasis on family and financial stressors.

But Florida fared a good deal better, with the highest-ranked city coming in all the way down at No. 41: Miami.

While the Magic City was relatively lax when it came to factors like health and work, it suffered a lot from financial and family-related stress.

But Miami wasn’t alone in its bracket: other high-ranking Florida cities included Jacksonville (No. 45) and Hialeah (No. 46).
