Ivarest, a company that sells topical products used to relieve itching, has released a study looking at the “itchiest” places in the U.S.
To put the study together, researchers said they surveyed 1,000 Americans about their personal experiences with outdoor skin irritants.
“To better understand where Americans face the worst backyard battles, we ranked major U.S. cities using five itch-related factors,” the study reads.
Those five factors are as follows:
- Seasonal allergies
- Number of pest control businesses listed on Yelp
- Online search interest in bug spray
- Online search interest in poison ivy remedies
- State-level prevalence of poison ivy

After all the data was gathered, researchers determined that the top-ranked spot in the country is Sarasota along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
“Sarasota, FL, ranked No. 1 overall as the itchiest city in our study, coming in first for pest control company listings and fourth for bug spray search interest. This Florida community is clearly invested in keeping bugs at bay.
Poughkeepsie, NY, placed second overall, ranking high for both poison ivy treatment searches and pest control access. Harrisburg, PA, Atlanta, GA, and Greenville, SC, rounded out the top five, all being hotspots for seasonal irritants and pest concerns."
