ORLANDO, Fla. â There are two kinds of people: the ones who have tried a pottery wheel and the ones who think theyâll be terrible at it.
Super Awesome Cool Pottery in Central Florida is making sure that second group doesnât stay scared for long.
The studio offers hands-on experiences that feel equal parts art class and stress relief â especially its beginner pottery wheel class, where first-timers learn the basics of throwing clay and leave with pieces that are uniquely their own.
âPottery is such a mindfulness activity. For that hour, itâs just the you and the clay. So youâre focusing on the present moment,â said Hunter Holmes, who teaches classes and handles marketing coordination at Super Awesome Cool Pottery.
Beginner pottery wheel class: what to expect
If youâve ever watched someone on a wheel and thought, I could never do that, this is the class designed to prove you wrong.
Holmes said the beginner potterâs wheel class is structured, guided and friendly for all skill levels.
âYouâre going to be guided through the creation of two bowls on the potterâs wheel,â Holmes said.
After the wheel portion, students move to the studio area to glaze and paint their pieces â and they can take their time.
âThe class is about an hour long in the wheel room. Once youâve completed the class, you can stay as long as you like to paint your bowl,â Holmes said.
Super Awesome Cool Pottery then takes over the behind-the-scenes part of ceramics: drying, glazing and kiln firing. Finished pieces are typically ready for pickup in about a month to a month and a half.
âWe hold them for about 4 to 6 weeks so we can let them fully dry, avoid any explosions in the kiln,â Holmes said. âWeâll then put a clear coat of glaze on top to make sure everything is food safe, and then we fire them and give you a text when theyâre ready.â
A no-pressure studio that celebrates imperfect art
One of the reasons beginners relax quickly is the studioâs emphasis on process over perfection.
Holmes encourages students to avoid comparing their work to others.
âDonât judge by your neighbors, donât compare yours to mine. The clay is going to do what the clay is going to do,â he said.
Thatâs part of what makes ceramics feel approachable: everyone starts with the same ball of clay, but the outcomes are wildly different.
âWe start with the same ball of clay and everything looks completely different,â Holmes said.
The lesson extends beyond art technique. If a bowl collapses or the clay wobbles, the point isnât to panic â itâs to try again.
âThe clay teaches you that when things go wrong, itâs okay. You can start over. You can recycle the clay and use it again,â Holmes said.
More than wheel classes: pottery painting, kids programs and Ferret Night
The studioâs calendar goes beyond the wheel.
Super Awesome Cool Pottery also offers pottery painting â the kind of drop-in, low-pressure activity that works for families, date nights and friend hangouts.
And yes, the studio hosts Ferret Night, where guests paint pottery while ferrets roam and visit tables.
âThroughout the night, ferrets will come and play at your table,â Holmes said.
For parents looking for creative options, the studio also offers youth programming.
Holmes said afterschool programs focus on helping kids bring their ideas to life and build confidence through art.
âThey can bring images from their head to creation to reality,â he said.
Why itâs a Central Florida must-try
In a region packed with theme parks and big attractions, Super Awesome Cool Pottery is the kind of experience that feels personal â you get an hour of hands-on focus and then you leave with a tangible souvenir you made yourself.
Itâs also the rare activity thatâs fun whether you arrive with friends or come solo looking for a new hobby.
Holmes summed up the studioâs promise simply: âYou guys bring the fun and the creativity. Weâll handle the rest.â
