Cops: Man accused of stealing $1 beer arrested for calling 911 9 times

Man tells 911 dispatchers store accused him of stealing beer

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A Daytona Beach man was charged with misusing a 911 system after police say he claimed a convenience store accused him of stealing a $1 beer.

Daytona Beach police said Philip Chege, 51, called 911 nine times on Sunday afternoon after claiming that the J Food Store on the 600 block of North Ridgewood Avenue accused him of stealing a beer.

"It should be noted that the J Food Store did not want to prosecute for the beer theft and did not want to sell him alcohol due to him being a known thief from prior incidents," according to the police report.

Police said Chege was told not to call 911 unless it was an emergency. Chege then walked behind J Food Store and dialed 911 again while officers were still in the parking lot, according to the report.

The report also says dispatchers had to hang up the phone on Chege several times because of his abusive and degrading comments toward them.

When officers made contact with Chege, he still was on the phone with 911, according to police.

Chege was arrested and taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail.
