Man crashes car after being shot in Pine Hills, police say

Shooter claims self-defense

PINE HILLS. Fla. – A man who was shot during an altercation in Pine Hills on Friday crashed his car while trying to speed away from the area, according to the Orlando Police Department.

About 6:45 p.m., two men were involved in an altercation near Rosemont Village Shoppes plaza, when one man shot the other, claiming self-defense, a news release said.

The man, who was shot once or twice in the torso, crashed his car while trying to leave the parking lot. He is in critical but stable condition at a nearby hospital.

The other man remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said. Officers weren't looking for anyone else.

A day care van in the parking lot was struck by a bullet, which smashed out the driver's side window. A witness told News 6 that no one was inside the van at the time, despite the day care being open.

The same witness also said a window in his truck was hit by a bullet.

Surveillance video from a nearby business obtained by News 6 shows the moment the white Dodge Charger crashed into a black Honda sedan as the driver attempted to flee.

In cellphone video also obtained by News 6, an officer is seen rendering aid to the man shot in the driver's seat of the car.

Orlando police have not said if the shooter will face charges.

The parking lot was temporarily closed as police investigated the case, but it reopened just after 9 p.m.

Police said they are not releasing identities of the two men involved until more information is gathered.
