Bicyclist dies after being hit by vehicle in Melbourne

Wreck took place on US 1 near University Boulevard

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A bicyclist who was struck on U.S. 1 in Melbourne near University Boulevard Friday morning was pronounced dead at a local hospital by afternoon, according to police reports.

The bicycle wreck slowed traffic just before 8 a.m., when the medical personnel administered life-saving treatment to 60-year-old Willie Gainer, of Melbourne, according to News 6 partner Florida Today.

Gainer was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he died as a result of his injuries. 

A 35-year-old Malabar woman has been identified as the driver in the wreck. 

Melbourne Police Department's traffic homicide unit is investigating the crash. 

No further information was released Friday.
