Officials have not released the woman’s name. Neighbors said she was in her 50s and lived alone.

Neighbor Jason Mattern said he was the first to respond to the fire.

“I ran out. I kicked in the door,” he said.

But even kicking down the door didn’t clear the smoke enough to safely go inside.

“It was all kind of a blur,” said Mattern, who expressed his condolences. “There weren’t very many people who visited her, unfortunately, but she kept on chugging.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Correction:

The mobile home is located in Palm Shores, not Melbourne. We apologize for the error.
