Rising fuel, rising rate: OUC approves electric cost increase

$13 rate hike starts Oct. 1

OUC expected to increase rates amid rising inflation, fuel costs

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Utilities Commission Board of Commissioners approved an increase in electric rate charges for residential and commercial customers at a meeting Tuesday.

According to OUC officials, rates will increase by 10%, or $13 a month, for a 1,000 kWh residential bill starting on Oct. 1.

More than 267,000 customers in Orange and Osceola counties will be impacted by this rate hike, which OUC said will help cover rising fuel costs for power generation.

“We want to remind customers that because fuel is a pass-through cost, when fuel costs go down, our customers’ bills will, too,” a spokesperson from OUC said.

The agency also approved a $3.50 monthly decrease in non-fuel charges to keep the increase as low as possible and save customers nearly $25 million total. They will also offer assistance and payment programs, such as Project CARE, Power Pass and budget billing.
