Deltona standoff suspect moved from hospital to Volusia County jail

Dempsey Hadley, 56, faces multiple charges

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Deltona man accused of being behind a standoff and setting his house on fire last month has now been cleared from an Orlando hospital and moved to a Volusia County jail, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

The standoff happened back on Dec. 22 at a home along Whitehorse Court after deputies said 56-year-old Dempsey Hadley stole cigarettes from a nearby gas station.

During the standoff outside Hadley’s home, a Volusia deputy was struck by a bullet when Hadley opened fire while barricaded in his vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. Toward the end of the standoff, deputies said Hadley set fire to the vehicle and his house.

Body camera video released from the sheriff’s office shows the moments SWAT team members were able to take Hadley into custody after he fell from an upstairs balcony. Since last month’s incident, Hadley has been recovering in an Orlando hospital.

The sheriff’s office said Hadley is being held on no bond on three counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and fleeing law enforcement.

Jail records show that Hadley is expected to face a judge for the first time on Wednesday.
