‘It’s not fair:’ Coast Guard member injured in hit-and-run crash demands justice

Despite video and finding pickup, police say can’t prove who driver was

PALM BAY, Fla. – The man on the motorcycle recorded being run over by a pickup truck says he’s still looking for justice, even though police can’t prove who was driving the truck at the time of the hit-and-run.

Oscar Lazo, 23, gave News 6 the video he found of the hit-and-run on Jan. 28 from a neighbor’s house at Eldron Boulevard and Collins Street.

Lazo, a member of the Coast Guard, said he was hospitalized after the driver struck him at the intersection.

“I suffered multiple fractures in my spine and bruising and swelling,” Lazo told reporter James Sparvero. “Just like, how could somebody do this and just run off like that.”

In an incident report, Palm Bay police said they talked to three men at a residence where they located the truck, but ultimately, no one was arrested.

“They just told me that they just couldn’t locate the driver and they can’t prove who the driver was,” Lazo said about talking to police.

Police wrote in the report that all three men at the residence claimed to not own the truck.

The men said there was a fourth person who was the owner of that truck and that person was out-of-state.

The men also told police they did not have that man’s phone number.

Lazo said that sounds suspicious.

“It’s not fair,” he said. “I’d like to see the person take accountability of their actions.”

Lazo said the incident has traumatized his family, as well.

“Like, why’d you do this and also, why’d you just leave,” he asked.

News 6 asked a police spokesperson to talk about not seeking charges but did not hear back Friday.
