Man arrested after firing at front door with Altamonte Springs officers outside, police say

Officers respond to area of Escondido Condominiums

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – A man arrested Friday night in Altamonte Springs is accused of shooting out of his apartment and trying to kill a police officer, according to a news release.

Benjamin Ferris, 65, faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, booking records show.

Altamonte Springs police responded around 11:08 p.m. to the area of Escondido Condominiums, acting on a report that Ferris was shooting through the windows and doors of his apartment. A 911 caller said they believed Ferris was hallucinating and thought unknown subjects were inside and outside of his residence, the release states.

Ferris allegedly fired through the front door and window as officers were positioned in the outside hallway, according to the release. One officer suffered minor injuries when receiving small particles of glass to his eye, the department said.

Ferris was taken into custody unharmed and transported to the Seminole County Jail, the release states. He’s due in court at 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 25.
