WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Winter Haven firefighters rescued two people Thursday night from a burning home in a retirement community, according to police.

The Winter Haven Fire Department responded around 7 p.m. to the 1400 block of Wild Dunes Court — within the Four Lakes Golf Retirement Community — arriving to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames within the home’s carport, police said in a news release.

The fire was spreading into the doublewide mobile home as firefighters began their attack, soon initiating a rescue after learning two people were inside of the home, the release states.

Both occupants were found in the living room area, according to the release. They were brought outside and airlifted to a hospital as more crews battled the flames, described as in critical but stable condition at last check, police said.

One firefighter who was taken to the hospital for dehydration was released after medical clearance, the statement reads.

Polk County Fire Rescue also responded for assistance, police said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
