ORLANDO, Fla. – While many students enjoyed their summer break, 600 young scholars in Orlando participated in the City of Orlando’s Summer Youth Employment Program.
The program provides real-world work experience to teens in several industries. It offers paid five-week internships along with support like transportation assistance. Sometimes even childcare assistance and clothing assistance to make sure they have everything they need at their internship.
“This was nothing like Law & Order,” said Boone High School Senior Jamilah Thomas.
Jamilah, who completed a five-week internship at Darling Law Firm, said her experience inspired her to pursue a career in criminal defense.
“I got to see him prepare for trial. That was something. I got to watch him deposition videos and go through medical records,” said Jamilah.
Jones High School Junior Kaylee Johnson worked at Sweeties Ice Cream gaining social and business skills.
“You know your friends say don’t do it. Go do it. It’ll be better for you when you get older,” said Kaylee.
This program not only offers work experience but also helps teens make valuable connections and understand workplace expectations.
Employers say it’s a privilege to give the next generation their first experience in the workplace and they plan to continue being involved in the program.
“It just makes you proud. Sometimes you just get the kid that is the MVP. They just show up and do what they’re supposed to do. That’s what happened this summer,” said Attorney Andrew Darling.
The city plans to host another round of internships in the fall. More information is coming, but in the meantime, the city is looking for more businesses to participate. Find information on the jobs program by clicking here.
