‘When do we say enough?’: Sheriff’s office responded to 70 incidents at Brevard store where baby was shot

Pastor calls community to stand against violence

COCOA, Fla. – The Brevard Sheriff’s Office gave an update on its investigation into a small child being shot in the middle of a gunfight at a food store.

Investigators now say the little girl who survived the shooting at the Cocoa Meat and Produce was just 1, not 2, as reported Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office also said it arrested the person who was with the baby, who exchanged gunshots with three other people.

Those suspects remain at large.

The sheriff’s office said the male with the baby was arrested because he was under 18, and therefore, shouldn’t have had a gun.

Pastor Rodney Osborne at the Friendship Primitive Baptist Church on South Burnett Road said the violence doesn’t surprise him so he thinks it‘s time for neighbors to talk about these issues with county leaders and law enforcement.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey said the shootout was over some kind of feud between the young people involved.

“We have residents who are afraid,” Pastor Osborne said. “Some of them, maybe, now, after what happened yesterday, may be afraid to come to church. We have to be able to come together to do something about the incidents that happen across the street.”

News 6 reporter James Sparvero checked with the sheriff’s office, and they told him they’ve responded to the store more than 70 times in just the last year, including a total of three shootings.

“When do we say enough?” Osborne asked. “It could have easily been my child. It could easily be someone else’s child, or grandchild, from a senseless shooting.”
