ORLANDO, Fla. – Subs and pups do a good service.
Canine Companions for Independence received a grant of more than $25,000 from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation on Tuesday.

The funding will enable four military veterans to be paired with service dogs and participate in team training.
The Firehouse Subs - Goodhomes Plaza location hosted a check presentation and K-9 demonstrations, including a meet and greet with a retired firefighter raising a puppy for the organization.
The grant supports Canine Companions’ mission to raise, care for, train, and provide expertly trained service dogs to military veterans with disabilities.
Cathy Rodgers, executive director of the Southeast Region at Canine Companions, highlighted the challenges veterans often face during their transition back to civilian life.

“Veterans may often face difficult transitions back to civilian life and may feel uncertain about their futures with new disabilities. Canine Companions service dogs — provided to them free of charge — empower veterans to regain physical independence, pride, and hope,” she said.
For the past 19 years, charitable donations have been the backbone of the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which supports first responders and public safety organizations nationwide.
Since its inception in 2005, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has awarded 6,841 grants valued at over $96 million to public safety organizations.
This grant is one of 87 awarded during the most recent grant cycle, which will provide critical lifesaving equipment valued at more than $2.1 million across the U.S.
