BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Law enforcement in Brevard County have shut down a local roadway amid an investigation into a possible explosive in a “suspicious vehicle,” according to the sheriff’s office.
The law enforcement response was seen near Interstate 95 and Deering Road, and an official with the sheriff’s office told News 6 that Deering Road was shut down in reference to a search for the vehicle.
Later, Sheriff Wayne Ivey announced that the road was closed between I-95 and US-1 “for an extended period of time due to a suspicious vehicle with a potential pipe bomb.”
In an update, Ivey declared that the vehicle had been spotted near a state radio tower earlier in the day.
“Our team approached the vehicle. His story didn’t match what was going on, so after a little bit of time, a search of his vehicle revealed what appears to be a pipe bomb,” Ivey said.
According to Ivey, the man in question had made statements about getting fired.
“What we do know at this point is this is not an act of terrorism. This appears to be a very isolated incident with an individual that was angry over some employment issues,” Ivey explained.
Ivey also said that law enforcement officers were working to render the bomb safe, though he urged members of the public to avoid the area until further notice.
Deering Road has since been reopened, the sheriff’s office confirmed Saturday.
