Footage released after Orange County deputies fatally shoot armed man

Todd Hannigan, 57, died following last month’s shooting

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – After a deputy-involved shooting turned fatal last month, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office has finally released body-camera video of the incident.

According to deputies, the shooting happened on the afternoon of June 23 at the Isles of East Millenia apartment complex.

At the time, deputies said they responded to the complex after receiving a call about a woman whose boyfriend reportedly held her at knifepoint “all night.”

Upon arrival, deputies then spoke with the woman and determined they had reason to arrest the man, whom deputies identified as Todd Hannigan.

“Over the next hour, deputies continued to communicate with the 57-year-old man, who was now barricaded inside the apartment,” Undersheriff Mark Canty later said at a press conference.

Within the next few hours, a SWAT team responded to the scene and positioned themselves around the apartment, though Hannigan eventually came out of a room and moved toward deputies with a knife, Canty explained.

“That’s when two of our deputies fired their service weapons, striking the man," Canty stated.

Hannigan was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

But on Monday, the sheriff’s office released footage showing more of what happened.

In a 911 call released by the OCSO, the caller can be heard telling an operator that her boyfriend had taken her phone and car keys. She then reported that she was able to escape when he “went into the shower.”

According to the caller, Hannigan had begun arguing with her after she got home the night before, and he threatened her by holding a knife to her throat.

“He’s been smoking crack cocaine for the last three days,” she can be heard saying.

Now, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy-involved shooting. After that finishes, the sheriff’s office will conduct its own internal investigation.
