‘It’s been hard:’ Flood displaces Mims apartment tenants

Helpers on site to clean up day after storm

MIMS, Fla. – The difficult job of picking up and moving out while their homes are cleaned is underway for people who lived in ten flooded Mims apartments.

Tuesday’s tropical downpour reminded some of the impacts made by recent hurricanes in north Brevard County.

Mims community correspondent James Sparvero went to the apartment building at U.S. 1 and Irwin Avenue as a resilient group helped others move forward.

Angus Campbell still had a couple inches of water standing in his flooded apartment. Despite the circumstances, he said he was doing alright.

“I feel a little broken, but I’m holding up,” Campbell told Sparvero.

The displaced tenant said he was thankful for those who were helping him and others to clean up.

“It is very helpful, and I’m grateful for it,” he said. “It’s been hard.”

Keith Edwards was part of that team helping out.

He’s also a general contractor who said he helped convert the building from an old motel to the apartments there now.

Edwards said it rained more during Tuesday’s storm than previous hurricanes that impacted Mims.

“I hate to tell you it was a little bit worse than Hurricane Ian or Milton,” he said. “It’s heartbreaking - see the units that we worked so hard on to make nice, people being put out.”

The Red Cross is helping those tenants like Campbell.

Edwards said he thinks tenants should be able to move back in about a week or two depending on the weather.
