SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. – Police activity due to an “ongoing incident” near South Daytona Elementary is affecting dismissals on Wednesday afternoon, school officials said on social media.
In an initial post around 1 p.m., officials said the incident reported in the neighborhood near the school caused streets near the school to be shut down.
“It is an ongoing situation with increased law enforcement presence, and therefore, walkers/bike riders will not be released. We know it is an inconvenience, but safety is our top priority. If your student is a walker/bike rider (flagpole or church gate), they will need to be picked up as we cannot release them to walk into the neighborhood,” the post read in part.
In an updated post around 1:30 p.m., school officials said that extra guardians and law enforcement will be on campus to help with the change in dismissal patterns and that parents can access the parent loop from Ridgewood/Anastasia or Harvard/Garfield. Additionally, Kenilworth at Ridge Avenue and Ridge Avenue at Oriole will be shut down.
According to the school, all walkers and bike riders will need to be picked up “as we cannot release them to walk into the neighborhood.”
The students will be held at the school and students will be kept in the parent pick-up loop.
