VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A memorial service was held Monday for Adam “Stump” Smith, the late assistant baseball coach for Spruce Creek High School.

The service took place at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. Smith was 26 years old and died May 10 in a single-vehicle crash, just days after the high school baseball season ended.

Family, friends and members of the community said Smith touched many lives across Volusia County.

His sister, who’s 20 years older, shared regrets about not having a closer relationship with him because of the age difference.

“I did not know him until now… and it is with the deepest shame and regret that I didn’t know the Adam you all knew.”

Smith was born in Port Orange and attended New Smyrna Beach High School, where he later coached before spending the last three years coaching at Spruce Creek High.

During the memorial, a pastor who goes by the name, Pastor J offered a message of encouragement.

“For everything there’s a season. Seasons come and seasons go.”

Smith’s spirit was honored in several ways, including a small plane flying overhead carrying a banner that read: “FLY HIGH BROTHER.”
