Celebrate Juneteenth this weekend at these Central Florida events

Juneteenth marks the official end of slavery in the U.S.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Events are set up across Central Florida this weekend in honor of Juneteenth.

The federal holiday marks the day that Union soldiers on June 19, 1865, told enslaved Black people in Texas that they were free, thus marking the end of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth became a federally recognized holiday on June 17, 2021, when former President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.

Communities are celebrating Juneteenth on Friday and Saturday with arts festivals and markets, parades, concerts and resource fairs.
