APOPKA, Fla. – A stretch of Boy Scout Road in Apopka is drawing new attention as the city considers lowering the speed limit in response to concerns about speeding and safety.

City leaders are expected to discuss changing the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph on the 1.2-mile section of the two-lane road.

Neighbors say the area has gotten busier as more homes are built nearby. A traffic count shows about 2,500 cars travel Boy Scout Road each day.

Lucas Riffel, who lives along the road, said what used to be a quiet area now feels riskier — especially near a hill that can limit drivers’ visibility.

“It’s very quiet here. There’s not much ruckus like there is downtown,” Riffel said, but added that he sees cars “flying down the road.”

Riffel said pulling in and out of his driveway can feel like a gamble when cars come over the hill at high speeds.

“Whenever I’m pulling out of the driveway, I’ve got to be extra careful… because people just come flying down it,” he said.

A traffic study shows there have been 19 crashes since 2020 along the 1.2-mile stretch, including four crashes involving injuries.

While some residents support the proposed speed reduction, others told News 6 they want the current 45 mph limit to remain in place.

Ada Olivares, who lives nearby, said lowering the speed limit could better reflect the area’s growth.

“I think it will be better… people are thinking this is like a parkway and it’s actually our neighborhood — a family neighborhood,” Olivares said.

The Apopka City Commission is scheduled to take up the proposal at its meeting Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
