$9.5M Marigold Avenue project adding 3 roundabouts in Osceola County

Redesign targets 4 intersections flagged in a 2020 FDOT crash study

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – A major safety project is reshaping Marigold Avenue in Osceola County, where crews are adding three single-lane roundabouts along a nearly 1.75-mile stretch of road.

The multimillion-dollar project is designed to slow traffic and improve safety at intersections that have a history of crashes.

According to a 2020 safety study from the Florida Department of Transportation, four intersections along Marigold Avenue were reviewed. The study found 107 crashes during the study period, including 70 injury crashes that resulted in 149 injuries.

Those findings helped lead to the improvements drivers are seeing now.

The intersection safety improvement project includes four intersections along Marigold Avenue in Osceola County: San Lorenzo Road, San Miguel Road, Laurel Avenue, and Peabody Road

The project includes three single-lane roundabouts, which are intended to force vehicles to slow down while traveling through the area. The county’s project plan also calls for high-visibility crosswalks, new lighting, drainage improvements, stormwater upgrades and utility work.

At San Miguel Road, the plan includes a new northbound left-turn lane to help drivers turn without blocking traffic behind them.

The total cost of the project is just over $9.5 million.

Construction is already underway, but Osceola County commissioners are expected to consider a change to an agreement with FDOT that helps fund the project. The vote is not about whether the roundabouts will be built, but rather how some of the utility work is being paid for.

County documents show the change would not add money to the project, leaving the total cost at about $9.5 million.

News 6 has reached out to the county for more information about the project’s cost. Updates will be provided as more details become available.
