Tropics Watch update for 7/13

Atmospheric moisture

What’s going on, guys?! Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges back with you for another edition of Tropics Watch!

The deep tropics in the Atlantic basin are nice and quiet. Closer to home we have a cold front that will be the focal point for possible tropical development.

Cold front stalls late in the week

IF something does develop officially, significant development is not expected to do atmospheric conditions and time spent over water.

Now, the Gulf is running way above normal in the temperature department, but wind shear should also be elevated. Storms don’t like wind shear.

And here’s the other thing...

A dip in the jet stream will approach the north Gulf coast by the weekend. That’s about the time an area of low pressure will try to develop.

Atmospheric moisture

The circled area in the graphic above is the model suggesting some development. The arrows represent the trough digging in from the Plains.

This entity will help to stretch any development. Tropical systems do not like to be stretched, they like to have a tight, well-defined center. That dip will effectively be working to prevent organization.

Euro Ensembles

Ensembles suggest a small chance for development across the northern Gulf, but this is far from a slam dunk. IF it does develop, it won’t have much time to get too terribly strong.
